Extenuating Circumstances

Your Union can offer you help with submitting an Extenuating Circumstance Statement.

If you have been unable to sit an exam or submit course work, or feel you may be unable to do so you may want to use UWS's Extenuating Circumstances Statement (ECS) Processes. This might be because of something that has happened in your personal life, or something else that may prevent you from being able to submit or undertake an assignment.

Submitting an ECS may impact the timings of your course and other progression issues so if you are not sure if this is right for you you should contact our advice workers as soon as possible.

More about ECS

The ECS will be avaliable online via Self Service Banner. This is a self-reporting service and no third party evidence is required.

If you submit an ECS for upcoming exams or course work then you must not sit the exam or submit work. If you do and haven’t cancelled the submitted ECS, the results will not count.

If you sit an exam/submits coursework and think you were affected by extenuating circumstance then you have a 48 hour window from sitting the exam/submitting the coursework to submitting an ECS, again this is done on line and no 3rd party evidence is required.

If you miss the 48 hour window you should contact our Advice Workers to discuss further.
