LGBT+ History Month - Why it Still Matters
LGBT+ History Month is a chance to celebrate queer history - but it’s also about recognising that the fight for equality didn’t end in the past. LGBT+ people have always been part of our communities, even when our stories were ignored, erased or actively silenced.
While progress has been made, many LGBT+ people still face discrimination, misunderstanding and barriers to feeling safe and supported. For trans and non-binary people in particular, these challenges are very real and very current. That’s why LGBT+ History Month matters: it connects the history we don’t always hear with the experiences people are living right now.
University should be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves. Visibility, community and support make a huge difference - whether you’re out and proud, questioning, or simply wanting to learn more.
Get involved and get support
Our LGBTQIA+ Society is a welcoming space to meet people, make friends, and be part of a supportive community on campus. You don’t need to have everything figured out to join - everyone is welcome. They are hosting their 3rd Birthday Party on the 27th of February - keep an eye out for more info!
UWS LGBTQIA+ Network (Re-) Launch Event is happening on the 18th of February for all members of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. More info here.
If you’re struggling or need someone to talk to, confidential support is also available through the Students' Union advice team, including wellbeing and advice team who are here to listen and help.
LGBT+ History Month reminds us why visibility, community and support still matter today.
