The Nigerian Students’ Society held an event for the Nigerian May intake students, and Matthew caught up with the President of the society, Osasere Destiny John, to find out more about it.
Matthew asked: What was the event about?
Destiny Responded: The Nigerian Students’ Society of the University of the West of Scotland hosted its welcome party for the May intake on Thursday, 31st July 2025. The event was specially organized to welcome new Nigerian students into the UWS community and provide a platform for interaction with fellow students.

Matthew asked: What was good about the night?
Destiny responded: It was a vibrant evening filled with opportunities to meet, greet, socialize, network, and orient new members of the society. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with soft music setting the tone. Students also enjoyed a round of table tennis and other games, which brought back nostalgic memories for many who had not engaged in any gaming or sporting activity since arriving in the UK.

Matthew asked: What did you gain from it?
Destiny responded: The evening featured an insightful address by Dr. Ibiyemi Omeiye, whose words inspired and encouraged the students as they begin their academic journey at UWS. The occasion was also graced by student representatives, the society’s president, and vice president, who warmly welcomed the new intake and shared words of encouragement.

Matthew asked: What was the best part?
Destiny responded: Every moment of the event was memorable, making it hard to single out the best part. For many, however, the highlights were Dr. Omeiye’s engaging speech and the delicious food; a true taste of home that brought smiles and comfort to all.

Matthew asked: Would you do an event like this again?
Destiny responded: Beyond the fun and laughter, the event was also deeply meaningful, for many It makes the University feel like a home away from home where everyone thrived socially and emotionally, Students had the chance to connect with like-minded peers, share experiences, and build new friendships. Many participants testified to how amazing and fulfilling the evening was, expressing eagerness for more gatherings in the future.
The welcome party was a huge success, thanks to the effort and diligence of the committee members, indeed the event was a beautiful blend of culture, community, and connection.

A huge thank you to Destiny John for giving us amazing insight and sharing such a meaningful experience from The Nigerian Students’ Society. It sounded like an incedible event with lots of fun, music, food and networking. A great enviorment to and gain new experiences in a way that feels like home.
