"Make UWS Great Again" (JBH 2020)

Who am I?

My name is James Blaire Huxtable. I am a 3rd year Sports Coaching student, and this is my first year at UWS. At this moment in time, I know some students are struggling to get to grips with the new "Hybrid Learning" approach and I’ll admit, I am finding it challenging too. With all these new challenges we face though, I am looking to help as many students as I can, to ensure they feel that they are getting the most out of their course, online learning and to ensure they don’t feel like a 'passenger' throughout their course work.

Why vote me?

Although this is my first year with the University, I am looking to engage as much as I can with students and staff. By standing to be a student rep, I will be able to involve myself with different students/staff, as well as get the chance to make student voices are heard during this challenging time. I am an outgoing guy; I have a real passion for my subject and have a real drive to get the most out of anything I do.

My Experience

In the summer of last year, I spent 3 months working at a summer camp in Pennsylvania through Camp America. Spending 3 months away from my friends and family was a hard challenge I had to live with and endure. I survived it and can honestly say it was the best summer of my life! I made friends for life and gained huge amounts of leadership and life skills.

I am a Qualified Referee in Football with the SFA and have been now for the last two years. I am a qualified First aider and play many different sports, with my main ones being Table Tennis and Football.

In my final year at Dumfries and Galloway College I was nominated for the Sports Officer role within the Student association. During the role, I gained knowledge on different aspects of my college experience and gained further experience through multiple CPD classes- which I helped organise for me and my fellow classmates. I helped deliver many students thoughts and ideas to the head of the Sports department within the college, which resulted in acquiring better sports equipment for the students. I am keen to use my previous expertise and knowledge gained to fulfil the role of being a student representative at UWS.

What are my aims?

My aims for the course year with the association will be:

-To make sure the students I represent are confident with online learning and have the necessary skills to participate in their virtual classes/platforms.

-Ensure students can gain more knowledge about topics they are struggling with (This will be done through helping students talk to their lecturers in a closer context)

-Additionally, I will strive to ensure that all students mental health is at the top of my agenda.

-Aim to enhance the students UWS virtual experience during these unprecedented times.
