Candidate for the position of Social Work Paisley 1st Year - Academic Rep

Bethany Elliott

I'll understand, I'll listen, I'll help.

My name is Bethany Elliott, but I prefer to go by Beth. I am a 22 year old 1st Year BA Hons Social Work student, and it is my passion to create a better society, beginning at UWS. If I am elected, I will make sure to listen to each and every student who approaches me with a concern, and discuss these issues with both my cohort and the Student Union. My first policy would be to introduce a safe space for all students, regardless of age, gender, race, or religion. This would give students the chance to destress and discuss any issues they are facing in a space where there is no judgment. As we are all online at the moment, I would propose that this be online via Teams with a specific room. I aim to take a progressive stand against racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny and other forms of discrimination, beginning with the removal of the statue of John Witherspoon, a slave-owner. It is also my aim during my candidacy to bring about an Equal Opportunities Committee - a proposal I noticed had been rejected. It is my desire to ensure that all students feel represented, secure, and trust in their class reps to do right by them. With the uncertain circumstances in which we live right now, it is normal and expected for people to be uneasy and unsure about what the next day will bring, but with me at the helm, tomorrow can only bring hope and progress.
