Manifesto for the Vice President of Welfare and Wellbeing

Salutations, UWS Community!

I am Benjamin Chimezie Akorah, born and raised in Nigeria and I am currently on my dissertation. I present myself as a candidate for the Vice President of Welfare and Wellbeing position, intending to utilize my aptitude, background, and passion for student welfare to execute a constructive influence on the UWS community. As a project management student at UWS, I observed the extraordinary diversity our university community possesses through this voyage. It is my firm conviction that our unity transcends our differences, and student welfare is one area in which this unity must be evident. Having personally faced some of the challenges that students encounter today, I deeply understand the profound impact of mental health on both academic and social experiences.

My Vision

My top priority is to create an inclusive campus culture that values diversity, equality, and student support. Together with my other sabbatical officials, if elected, I would negotiate the following terms.

1. Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: My steadfast dedication is to enhance greater participation from underrepresented communities, guaranteeing that each student, irrespective of background or campus placement, feels esteemed and integrated.

2. Mental Health Services: Compassion, empathy, and evidence-based approaches will guide my efforts to improve programs such as mental health awareness campaigns, support groups, and accessible counselling sessions. By providing tools for stress management and resilience building, we can enhance the quality of life for our students.

3. Housing instability: I will work with local housing authorities and landlords to find affordable student housing options. I will also set up a food pantry, and keep and improve campus meal assistance programs going so all our students can meet their basic needs and concentrate on their studies.

4. Financial Aid for Students: No student will be deprived of high-quality education due to financial limitations. By collaborating with charitable organisations and sponsors, I commit to improving the funding opportunities available to international students.

Approach and Dedication:
I am a firm believer in the effectiveness of collaboration. Should I be granted this responsibility, I will uphold and enhance an open-door policy that guarantees the inclusion of all student's perspectives. I will be accessible via telephone and email, actively soliciting your feedback to advocate for your requirements adequately.

Experience Is Crucial:
My undergraduate experience in the union, as a project manager, and volunteer for various student organisations in UWS has honed my leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. These qualities will come in handy when trying to meet the various demands of our student body.

In summary,

I am excited about the chance to collaborate with you in improving student welfare at UWS. Our shared goal is to establish an academic institution where every student not only succeeds in their academic journey but also receives the necessary support to thrive.

Please, vote for me Benjamin Chimezie Akorah, an advocate who aims to create a more inclusive, healthier, and happier UWS community.
