Supporting Students to Thrive

Creation of a Student Skills and Employment Hub

The most ambitious aim of my manifesto is the creation of a service that students can use to seek employment both during and after their studies. This would be done by using links with the local community and links the university already has with businesses both local, national and global. This would give students an advantage of having direct contact to businesses that could potentially employ them. Using existing bodies (such as the various Chambers of Commerce), I would aim to provide students with the best possible options of employment and skills development furthering their future prospects.

Improve Union Facilities and Events On All Campuses

As important as it is to think about our studies and careers after University, it’s also important we enjoy our time here, and the Union is such vital part of that. I would like to see a larger number and more choice in the type of events being offered at all UWS campuses. I also want to see a Union bar finally being put in Lanarkshire which is currently seriously not providing students with on campus facilities.

Campaign For Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

For the last year I have been LGBT+ Officer, and have I’ve worked to ensure that everyone on our campus feels welcomed and included. I would to continue this work and continue to make all UWS students feel that this is a University where they can be themselves.

More Campus Cohesion and Improved Inter-Campus Communication

One of the biggest issues at UWS is the lack of integration between the 5 campuses. I will encourage cross campus communication and push for more inter-campus events to try bring the University together. Also trying to make it easier for students to attend events in any of the campuses.

Campaign For Cheaper Student Accommodation

Students are currently paying extortionately high rates for student accommodation. This puts a lot of students into financial difficultly. I would campaign to have these rates lowered so students wouldn’t have to struggle every month in order to have a roof over their heads.  University should be a time for furthering your studies and gaining valuable life experiences not worrying whether you’re going to have enough money to make it to the end of the month.

Feasibility Study Into On Campus Nurseries

I would push for a study into the viability of having nurseries on campuses. Students with children have asked about the possibility of re-opening the old nursery at Paisley UWS as this would be beneficial not only financially but also in terms of the childcare being close to the campus. A feasibility study would show whether this was something that could be set up at all UWS campuses.
