With Christmas just weeks away the SAUWS Environment Team has made a short film that draws together some ideas on how we can save money and help the environment this Christmas. Some of these ideas include changing from the traditional Christmas card to a modern electronic version and recycling or reusing old gifts. The video also covers food waste which is an issue over the festive period each year. Using a little craft and guile we can reuse most of our Christmas leftovers or save ourselves from making too much in the first place.
The team has also put together a short list of ideas to save waste that we can all try in our homes over the festive period:
Buy your fruit and vegetables naked (without packaging!) that way you can pick the best ones too. If you can't avoid packaging, check to see if it can be recycled or composted. Where there's a choice, make a good one!
Don't panic buy just because the shops will close for 2 days! Plan your meals ahead and take 5 minutes to check your fridge and cupboards before you go shopping to make sure that you only buy what you need.
Try not be tempted by 'buy one get one free' offers on fresh produce. Plan ahead and make sure that you will be able to use it in time.
Perfect portions! Take the guesswork out of planning meals and use scales, mugs or tablespoons to work out your perfect portion.
If you have cooked too much eat it for lunch the next day or put in a plastic tub and freeze for another day. This will save you both time and money too!

Christmas Switch Off Campaign
The SAUWS Environment Team is also running a switch off campaign within the University and Union working with staff and students. The aim is to save energy used by printers, computers, un-needed lighting and all other non
-essential electrical equipment over the festive period. If you are going away over Christmas, why not consider switching off your home- try turning the heating off and switching your electronics off at the plug. This could help you save money on energy as well as make for a greener holiday period. For any information, tips or help on this campaign contact us on:
