ROLE DESCRIPTION

This volunteer role is similar for both the Family Rights Service and the Destitute Asylum Seeker Service (you will work in one of these only).
Our Family Rights Service supports parents and children through every step of their asylum journey
Our Destitute Asylum Seeker Service provides practical advice and support for destitute people who have had an asylum claim rejected and have No Recourse to Public Funds
You will assist case managers/advisers in supporting and advocating for people going through the asylum process including children. Duties may include:

  • Assisting with GP registration and appointments with GPs.
  • Assisting with nursery/ school/ college/ESOL class registrations
  • Assisting with families’ school grants application and travel application forms
  • Signposting and referring people to food and clothing banks
  • Explaining different NHS services
  • Linking people with lawyers and supporting them to submit a fresh asylum claim
  • Recording data gathered on the case management system
  • Ongoing welfare checks to reduce isolation and improve well-being.
  • Link people and children with their local areas and services.
  • Identify services required such as gyms, clubs, integration networks and volunteering opportunities

WHAT COULD YOU GAIN?

Students can gain valuable experience as part the team in of one of SRC’s core services, working in a fast-paced environment delivering advice and advocacy to refugees. They will gain experience of cultural exchange and knowledge of statutory services such as the NHS and local authorities. Volunteers will receive the following training in this role (as a minimum):

  • Working with Interpreters training
  • Introduction to Refugees: Asylum and Resettlement training
  • Child Protection training
  • CRM database training
  • Casework processes training

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Effective communication and listening skills
  • An ability to show empathy with the needs of people seeking protection in Scotland
  • Ability to record information accurately and on time in our database.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • A commitment to weekly attendance so that the needs of people seeking support and advice can be met at the time they most need it.
  • Punctuality and trustworthiness.
  • An understanding of equal opportunities and the importance of confidentiality.
