Alzheimer Scotland: Volunteer Befriender

Volunteer Befriender: ongoing opportunity

What's the role?

Would you like to volunteer on a one-to-one basis by providing support and companionship to someone living with dementia? Whether it’s going for a cup of coffee, a stroll in the park or coming along to one of our singing groups, being a volunteer befriender is a hugely rewarding experience and could help make a real difference to someone’s life. The befriending service is a unique partnership between Alzheimer Scotland and Renfrewshire Council, making sure no one faces dementia alone.  We are currently recruiting volunteers who can dedicate 1-2 hours weekly/fortnightly to:

  • Provide companionship for people living with dementia who may be lonely or isolated.
  • Support people living with dementia to maintain their interests and hobbies
  • Enable people living with dementia to reconnect with groups and places in their community.

Who are they?

Alzheimer Scotland is the leading dementia organisation in Scotland. We campaign for the rights of people living with dementia and their families and provide an extensive range of innovative and personalised support services, community activities, information and advice at every stage of the dementia journey.

What could you gain?

Being a befriender is a great way to increase your employment or further-education opportunities. You will receive a full induction into the values and principles of Alzheimer Scotland as well as training to increase your understanding of dementia. You will have the opportunity to meet people working in the third-sector and become an integral part of a community of support networks, all-the-while developing your own social and personal skills.

You will have the option of completing additional online training if you would like to receive an official Befriending Networks Certificate in recognition for your efforts. References can be provided upon request following a successful 6 month commitment and fulfilment of the role.
