Passed Policies and Progress

Find out what Students' Union policies have been passed by students, and more importantly, what is being done about them.

Here you can find a list of all the policies which have been passed by student council. We're working on a live tracker so you can check the progress of each policy, but until we've got that up and running please contact your student president team to ask for an update on policies. You can also check out current ideas and rejected ideas.

    Renew 24hr Library access

    Passed
Allow students access to the Lanarkshire library 24-7.

Why you think it is important

Pre- covid, students could access the library at Lanarkshire 24-7 making use of this great facility. Since the phased return to campus, the library can only be accessed 9-7 Monday to Friday and 9-5 at the weekends. Late night, early morning and overnight access is essential for many students especially those who have to take on nightshifts (nursing and midwifery students for example) and for whom daytime only access is often not possible. This will not involve any extra staffing as hub and library staff's hours will remain unchanged. Students are currently advised they can use 'the street' to continue their study if required, while the doors to the library are closed. This would potentially involve more students filling a smaller space (NOT advisable in a pandemic). Many students choose to return home rather than use the street as this space is designed to be a socialising space and not a study space. Access to books and printers are denied by closing the library doors.

Is there anything else you think we should know?

I have spoken with two of the security staff members who have assured me there would be no issue for them in not closing the library overnight. It will not involve any extra cost for UWS.

I have read the guidance on what makes a good policy on the student council page

      Yes.
